So Much More

As the birthplace of Western Civilization, Greece offers so much more than just sunny beaches. Here are just a few examples of what the Peloponnese and the Messinia region have to offer.

Kalamata

Kalamata is the capitol of our region. Beside the airport, Kalamata is where you go to get everything sorted. From international banks to power shopping, you will find most of it here. And the city is just 45 km away.

But Kalamata is also a pretty town with much to offer: The mile long beach promenade, the picturesque old town with cafes and shopping, museums, the farmers market (twice a week), byzantine churches or the international marina. Whatever you are looking for, you will most of it in Kalamata.

A day out – combined with Kalamata

Within an hour on the other side of Kalamata, on the Messinian peninsula, you will find plenty of tempting activities and places to visit. Here are just a few.

Ancient Messene

Many visitors find ancient Messene outside Kalamata even more impressive than Olympia. Originally, the old city was surrounded by a 9 km long fortified circuit wall. The old stadium and the amphitheatre are still of a mighty civilisation from our past.

Navarino Golf

Two signature designed 18-hole golf courses, the seaside The Dunes Course and The Bay Course.

Gialova Lagoon

The wetlands of Gialova are a major stopover point for many migratory birds from Africa. Many rare species of birds such as herons and flamingos, ospreys, stilts, avocets, calidris, snipe, curlew, tartaric, terns, and the only chameleon found in Europe. (the African chameleon changes colour depending on his mood and is an endangered species).

Voidokilia Beach

Voidokilia Beach is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. Its sand forms a semicircular strip of dunes, or the Greek letter omega (Ω). On the land-facing side of the dunes, is the Gialova lagoon.

Polylimnio Waterfalls

Polylimnio Waterfalls are a series of several connected waterfalls cutting to the lush hill sides. Stunning beautiful to visit in the spring or early summer.

Messinia also offers Kalamari waterfalls and Valta waterfalls, both worth visiting.

The Mani Penninsula

Ridomo Gorge

West Mani has four gorges and Ridomo is for sure the most spectacular. A gem for hiking lovers.

Prophet Elias – 2.407 metres above the beach

Few places in the world offers so tall mountains so close to the coast. From the peak of Prophet Elias it is just 20 km in air distance to the beaches in Kardamili.

Surrounded by the peaks of the Taygetus mountains, the Vassiliki forest will always attract hiking lovers.

Porto Cagio

Almost as south you can get on mainland Europe. A natural harbour for sea farers. And a true gem for all that just love watching.

Combine with a walk to the Tenaro Lighthouse. By arrival you might feel you have reached the end of the world. Africa next.

Gythio

The beautiful seaside town of Gythio is a gem for seafood lovers.

Also perfect to combine with a trip to Monemvasia or to the World Heritage Site of Mystras.
